The inauguration of the Global Surgery Directorate marked an important step in creating a formal institutional structure for global-surgery collaboration, education and future development at Northwest.

The Global Surgery Directorate was inaugurated on 23 February 2024 by Prof. Franco Servadei, visiting Professor of Neurosurgery at Northwest School of Medicine and former President of the WFNS.
From global-surgery activity to global-surgery structure
Events create momentum.
Institutions create continuity.
The inauguration of the Global Surgery Directorate represented a shift from individual activities toward creating a defined institutional space around global surgery at Northwest.
Leadership behind the milestone
The ceremony included Prof. Dr Tariq Khan, Dr Sidra Jabbar, Dr Zia Ur Rehman, Prof. Dr Noor Ul Iman and Dr Almas Khattak, alongside faculty members.
Why institutionalisation matters
Global-surgery activities can include conferences, research, educational programmes, advocacy, partnerships and clinical capacity building.
Without a structure connecting those activities, they can remain isolated projects.
An institutional platform can help create continuity linking people, programmes and partnerships over time.
The Global Surgery Directorate represents an important milestone in Northwest's institutional global-surgery journey.
Building for continuity
The value of an institution is not established on inauguration day.
It is established by what it enables afterward: research, education, partnerships, advocacy, mentorship and sustained collaboration.
Sustainable global-surgery work needs more than events. It needs structures capable of carrying collaboration forward.
